Spam check: see if a number is reported as spam or a scam

The spam check tells you how a phone number has been reported by others, and what kind of caller sits behind it. Use it to screen inbound calls, or to clean a dialing list before you call it.

What it tells you

  • The caller type behind the number, for example a spam caller rather than a normal one.
  • The threat category the number falls into.
  • How many complaints have been filed against the number.
  • The kind of nuisance or scam reported, for example telemarketing.
  • A fraud score and risk level, with the reasons that drove them, such as spam reports.
  • A suggested next action and a short plain-English message about the number.

What you need to provide

The phone number you want to screen for spam and robocall reports.

What it costs

1 credit per lookup. Numbers outside the US and Canada are metered separately and can cost more per lookup. Live per-product costs are shown on the Billing page in your dashboard.

How to run it

  • In the dashboard: Spam & Risk Check
  • From your code: POST /v1/phone-spam, then see the Developer Hub at app.1lookup.io/developer-hub.

Good to know

  • Results are point-in-time. Complaint counts build up over time and a number that looks clean now can be reported tomorrow, so re-check numbers you keep calling.
  • A low report count is not proof that a caller is safe, and a high one is not proof of fraud. Use the score alongside your own rules.
  • The result describes reports made against the number, not the identity of the person using it.
